Diversity can't be a policy, it must be a belief. The world is changing, and we don’t have more space for prejudice. During a job application process age, gender and colour should not be criteria. Skills and experience are the points in the discussion. This must be obvious for entrepreneurs and managers. If you have candidates with similar resumes, pick the one who represents a minority, because diversity is beneficial for your business. We need to fight against sexism, racism and ageism. Those are real problems around the globe. It is easy to find news regarding it even in The SV, which is based in one of the most open-minded places in the world, San Francisco.
I’m glad I experienced working in a super diverse team in The SV. At some point, we were nine people from 8 different countries and speaking fourteen languages. We were 5 girls and 4 boys. During that period, I learned a fundamental lesson about people. People are different, sodon’t assume you know how they think and what they want. Differences are notably harder to understand when you talk about different cultures. To succeed in different markets, you need to understand about diversity.
With my Chinese colleague, I learned that people in China like to buy and own thinks. This behaviour is entirely different from the Americans who love a subscription business model. Brazil market doesn’t follow any of those preferences, here we like to buy but splitting the pay. That is one small example regarding business model preferences. I’m sure anyone could find out this kind of information in some market research, but it is just a small piece of the iceberg. Since we all lived in different places, we have different ways of analysing situations. Consequently, by combining discrete opinions, we can build remarkable solutions. When you are creating a product or service, different ways of thinking is something you want on your team.
In the end, I feel that when you introduce a new policy people think that it is a rule that they must follow. It must be natural to believe in diversity. When you believe that diversity is positive, which is, things happen naturally. Before that we will need to be content if diversity policies.
